Oct. 22: Chelsea District Library to host SRSLY Photovoice gallery event

(Chelsea Update would like to thank Daniel Marthey for the information in this story.)

In the spirit of this year’s 5H Community Read theme, “Avoiding Unhealthy Substances,” the Chelsea District Library, in collaboration with SRSLY, will host a Community Photovoice Gallery event.

Photovoice will showcase messages related to substance abuse, portrayed through artwork created by local community members. This event will take place in the Chelsea District Library’s McKune room on Thursday, Oct. 22 from 6:30-8 p.m. It will include a gallery viewing followed by a short presentation and open discussion of substance use trends in Chelsea.

SRSLY and the Chelsea District Library wish to extend their invitation to all area residents, youth and adult, who are interested in engaging in a discussion about avoiding unhealthy substances in Chelsea.

Community Photovoice is a project that asks people to think about issues related to substance abuse in their community, and take pictures that symbolize those issues. The photographer also writes a short paragraph explaining each picture, and what it represents.

This project is meant to create perspective and thought on issues such as community norms and their impact on substance use, local marketing of alcohol and tobacco, use among youth and adults, access to alcohol and other substances and the positive aspects of our community that keep kids away from drugs and alcohol.

In addition to the Gallery Event, SRSLY is calling on all area residents to participate in Community Photovoice by submitting your own photograph and message. If you have a message about substance use or would like to share your anti-drug, please submit your artwork vie email to [email protected] with “Photovoice Entry” on the subject line, or post your entries directly to the SRSLY Facebook page at (www.facebook.com/srslychelsea).

Artwork entry deadline is Oct. 12. The Project Team will select ten pieces for the Photovoice Gallery and of those finalists, attendees of the gallery event will vote to select prizewinners. All entry participants are encouraged to attend the event. Please note that you do not have to be a professional photographer to enter the competition.

Pictures will be judged based on composition, explanation, and potential for generating thoughtful discussion about substance use at the gallery event. All entry finalists will have their artwork and message professionally printed for gallery viewing and voting. Prizes of $100, $60 and $40 will be awarded.

For more information about the Photovoice Gallery Event, contact Youth/Teen Librarian Edith Donnell at [email protected] or call 734-475-8732. For information about Photovoice submissions, contact SRSLY Events Coordinator Daniel Marthey at [email protected] or call 734-593-6269.
