Human Rights Commission Promoting Chelsea as Welcoming Community

(Chelsea Update would like to thank Mary Keaton and Joanne Ladio for the information in this story.)

The Chelsea Human Rights Commission is asking area Realtors and mortgage lenders to help educate potential new residents about the rights and protections covered by Chelsea’s Human Rights Ordinance.

Realtors and banks are key ambassadors to our community and the HRC would like to promote the goal for Chelsea to be a community that welcomes everyone.

April is the 56th anniversary of the Fair Housing Act (passed in 1968) but the Department of Justice website says that discrimination in housing continues to be a problem.

Chelsea’s Anti-Discrimination Ordinance says that “no individual shall be denied equal protection of the laws; nor shall any individual be denied the enjoyment of his or her civil or political rights or be discriminated against because of actual or perceived age, color, disability, familial status, gender expression, gender identity, genetic information, height, disability status, marital status, national origin, race, religion, sex, sexual orientation, source of income, veteran status, or weight.”

The HRC is asking area Realtors and mortgage lenders to provide new or potential clients a copy of the Human Rights Commission brochure. This brochure has information on the Ordinance and how to file a complaint.  Copies of the brochure are being provided to all area realty offices, banks, and mortgage lenders.

A copy of the full anti-discrimination ordinance is here.

The HRC can be reached by emailing [email protected].

Meetings are held in the Council Chambers on the first Wednesday of the month at 7 pm.  (The May meeting will be May 15.)
