On Monday, Jan. 8 at 7 pm in the train depot, the Chelsea Area Historical Society will begin its 50th year and to celebrate, launches a year-long series focusing on Chelsea’s centennial businesses.

To kick-off the series, Tim Merkel, co-owner of Merkel Furniture and Carpet, will tell the story of the evolution of the store from its beginning in 1924 when Ferdinand Merkel began selling hardware, flooring, and furniture. Over time, the business expanded southward on Main Street and stopped selling hardware to specialize in flooring, area rugs, mattresses, high quality furniture, and design services.

The program is free to members and a $10 fee is charged for non-members.

The program will follow our brief annual meeting where the election of president and treasurer will take place. Nominations from the floor are encouraged.
