June 2: get flowers, veggies and your groove on at the farmers market

By Lisa Carolin

In addition to fresh vegetables, herbs, plants, cheese, meats and baked goods, every week the Saturday farmers market offers a variety of activities including music, food demonstrations, and kids’ activities.

Jill Schaefer, a Master’s degree student at the University of Michigan studying public health and social work, runs the children’s booth.

“My goal is to bring hands on activities along with nutrition education based on what’s available at the market,” said Schaefer.

Examples of the activities she provides include learning the names and colors of plants and flowers, and showing kids how to eat snap peas.

Schaefer can also be found at the Intergenerational Garden at the Chelsea Senior Center, where she is an intern, as well as caring for the garden at Faith in Action.

The Saturday market takes place in the municipal parking lot by the library along Park Street from 8 a.m.-1 p.m.
