(Chelsea Update would like to thank Bob Milbrodt for the information in this story.)
Last Monday the Chelsea Kiwanis Club heard from Sarah Shugart, executive director of Faith in Action. She outlined the extensive social services available to those in need as well as those services available for anyone in the community.
Their service area has been expanded to include Scio Farms Estates and Grass Lake in addition to Dexter and Chelsea School Districts. The 200-square-mile service area is the largest in the county.
Registered clients may use the food pantry, get financial help with utilities and rent, receive school supplies, winter holiday gifts and a meal, and counseling.
Anyone in the community may select from donated clothing and household goods, use a benefit navigator for publicly funded programs, get financial counseling, receive advocacy to connect with resources, use free medical equipment, and more.
All services are supported by their staff of 6, plus: 65 volunteers, 13 board members, and assistance from organizations, such as Food Gatherers, Kiwanis Thrift Sale, Knights of Columbus, and Meijers,
In conjunction with Avalon Housing, affordable housing has opened at Sharon Ann Apartments in Chelsea. Hilltop View Apartments & Townhomes serve the need in Dexter.
The Kiwanis Club of Chelsea recognized the important work being done, and was pleased to offer our annual support.
