Lyndon Township: residents want more answers about May 4 gas main explosion, Guinan Road to get new gravel

About a dozen people attended the Lyndon Township Board meeting on Tuesday, May 12, and most of those in attendance were very concerned about the gas main explosion which occurred on Monday, May 4 near South Lake Drive and Roepke Road (see story).

Township resident Susan Morse addressed the board during the public comment portion of the meeting. “I would really like to see a public meeting with Consumers Energy, and anyone else who has pipelines through the township, because it really has been a fiasco down here.”

Morse added that she would also like the proposed meeting to include area emergency responders.

She said she was also extremely concerned about the lack of information provided by Consumers Energy. An email from Area Manager Gregory Meyer to Township Supervisor Marc Keezer dated May 7 stated that “There was no ignition of gas.”

Area residents, however, heard a loud explosion, and according to Chief Jim Payeur of the Chelsea Area Fire Authority (CAFA) there was a 50-foot crater at the scene of the rupture.

Keezer agreed that a public meeting should be organized, and stated that he would contact “Pipeline companies (such as Consumers Energy and Enbridge), first responders, police, fire, HAZMAT, and the Michigan Public Service Commission.”

Keezer reminded residents about the Nixle alert sytem. Residents can sign up here to receive community and emergency updates via text or email. According to the Nixle website, “Stay safe and informed by getting alerts directly from your local fire and police right to your phone via text or email.”

In other news, the board moved to allocate $5,500 for about 600 tons of new gravel for Guinan Road. The project will cost $11,000, and the township is hoping matching funds from the Washtenaw County Road Commission (WCRC) will cover the other half of the project expense. Guinan Road will receive a 4-inch layer of new limestone starting approximately 0.2 miles south of Waterloo Road extending for about one third of a mile. Associated dust control and restoration will also be included in this project.

  1. What about the rest of the mud road. Tthey even removed the lime stone I paid for in front of my house the last time they graded in the rain.
