National expert on elder fraud speaks at CRC

(Chelsea Update would like to thank Lisa French for the information in this story.)

United Methodist Retirement Communities (UMRC) Foundation will host national expert, professor and psychologist Peter A. Lichtenberg, Ph.D. for a free educational program on Thursday, Oct. 3 at Chelsea Retirement Community (CRC), located at 805 W. Middle St.

The presentation, entitled, “Protecting Yourself from Elder Fraud and Financial Abuse” will begin at 3:30 p.m. in CRC’s Dancey House Theatre, followed by a Question and Answer session at 4:30 p.m.

Lichtenberg is a professor of psychology at Wayne State University as well as the director of the Merrill Palmer Skillman Institute, the Institute of Gerontology and the Founding Director of the Wayne State University Lifespan Alliance.

A national expert in financial capacity assessment and financial exploitation of older adults, Lichtenberg has spoken before Congress as well as the National Academies of Science in Washington, D.C.  He has also made contributions to the practice of psychology across a variety of areas including Alzheimer’s disease, medical rehabilitation and with those suffering from late life depression.

“Wellness is an inherent part of UMRC’s mission and guiding beliefs, including the physical, spiritual and financial well-being of the elders we serve,” says UMRC Foundation and Porter Hills Foundation President, Wendy Brightman in a press release.

“Financial fraud and abuse of older adults is a growing problem in our country, yet one that often goes unreported,” she said, adding, “Dr. Lichtenberg empowers older adults in ways they can protect themselves from financial abuse.  I have heard Dr. Lichtenberg present twice before and urge the community to attend this educational presentation.”

Pre-registration is appreciated, though not required, for this free event.
