Deanna Robbins with Gateway Restoration of Chelsea, has been collecting data over the past 10 years and compiled a list of the Top 10 most common damages that occur to the home, specifically in the Chelsea market.

This week we will cover #10 – starting with the least common and probably the most interesting type of damage:

Collapse

This category represents less than 1 percent of all damages, but boy can it make a mess.

Over the years, Gateway Restoration has assisted with collapsing foundations, walls, decks, roofs and more. In one case (and their most memorable), the home’s entire wall collapsed – dumping all of the landscaping into their basement – watch the video below for this amazing story.

Gateway Restoration offers these tips to prevent the more common types of collapses:

Snow load Collapse

  1. Keep the snow off the roof.
  2. Keep all drains clear and unblocked.
  3. Keep the roof well maintained and do repairs/replacements as soon as required.

Vegetation Growth Collapse

  1. Vines/Ivy – Do not grow them directly on the building, instead grow them on a support that is 6-8 inches (trellis, lattice, metal grid) from your home’s siding.
  2. Trim your landscaping frequently.

Other Types of Collapse

  1. Address any water seepage or water leaks immediately.
  2. Perform regular maintenance to and around your home.
  3. Address any HVAC or plumbing issues.
  4. Hire only licensed professionals to perform any work.
  5. Address any falling bricks, walls, or unusual exterior activity or foundation issues.

In summary, being proactive and aware of any potential threats will help you avoid a collapse in your home.  If it does happen, Gateway Restoration is available 24 hours a day to assist you.

Be sure to join us next week: we will cover #9 out of our Top 10 most common damages in the home.
