Oct.23: Chelsea Kiwanis to hear from Sandy Diemer

(Chelsea Update would like to thank Bob Milbrodt for the information in this story.)

The Chelsea Kiwanis Club will her from Sandy Diemer on Monday, Oct. 23. She leads a group of dedicated sewers at the Chelsea Senior Center who make dresses and other items to donate to charities supporting vulnerable children around the world.

The conduit organization is Little Dresses for Africa, a non-profit Christian organization formed to send relief to the children of Africa. Volunteers from all over the United States, Canada, and round-the-world join to create simple little dresses and other items made from pillowcases and other scrap pieces of fabric. Their motto: We’re not just sending dresses, we’re sending hope.

Last Monday, members heard from Matt Pedlow, who will be taking another busload of students to Gettysburg National Battlefield next week. This year, they will devote time to the Antietam Battlefield in Maryland, which looks much the same as it did before the September, 1862 battle. Antietam was the site of one of the most casualties in a single day in American history, over 22,000, and one of the first five battlefields recognized federally (1890).

The club meeting begins each Monday at 6:15 p.m. in the St. Joseph Mercy Chelsea Hospital cafeteria, and the speakers begin at about 6:45 p.m. Everyone is invited to the club’s meetings to learn about Kiwanis.
