Psyched Out: What’s executive functioning?

By Kristin Krarup-Joyce

I recently participated in a webinar on executive functioning presented by Jack Naglieri, Ph.D. I thought I’d share a great strategy that you can use with your child to build executive functioning.

First of all, what is executive functioning?

Executive Functioning (EF) is a basic psychological process commonly known as planning. In other words, how to do what you decide to do. It is actually a bit difficult to teach this directly. Dr. Nagleri suggested using a youtube video of a flash mob. You may know that we had our own flash mob here in Chelsea on Halloween. You might want to use that video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EeQRmf8f9xw )Watch the video with your child and discuss it.

What did they need to do to pull that off?

How do you think it got started?

How did they spread the word?

How did they manage the timing of when everyone would join in?

Do you think they had a back-up plan?

What might have that been?

The questions you could pose are endless. The important thing is, you are discussing the process.

If you try this, I’d love to hear about it. Please join me on twitter: Psyched Out @NCESupport
