Amy Gilbert, the 2014 Chelsea Community Fair queen, waves to the crowd during the Hometown Holiday Light Parade.

For those of you who missed Hometown Holiday last weekend, it was another fun-filled community event that included everything from gingerbread house decorating and Christmas carols to a live nativity, photos with Santa and the light parade.

This year, for the first time since I’ve been attending the light parade, 2014 Fair Queen Amy Gilbert rode in a lit convertible. And she’d like to encourage young ladies to enter the 2015 fair queen competition. Be sure to ask Amy, who attends Chelsea High School, all about her experience. She’ll tell you she’s had a blast.

Speaking of preparing for the 2015 fair, as everyone finishes up (or, perhaps, begins) their Christmas shopping, here are a few ideas for folks. They will not only keep children and grandchildren (and perhaps even adults) busy during the holiday break, but also can be entered in the Chelsea Community Fair this summer.

Have you thought about a needlepoint, cross-stitch or crewel kit, which will provide hours of enjoyment for the maker? Directions are included in the kits and the finished creation can be entered in next year’s fair. I’m already working on a cross-stitch design this year. After a long hiatus from doing cross-stitch, this winter I am working on a large cow design for next year’s fair. It’s a reminder of the fun I had showing Faith, the Brown Swiss.

What about a set of paints or colored pencils or even pastels and paper for hours of creative fun? Again, the finished product can be framed entered in the arts and crafts division at fair.

How about a gift of a cookbook filled with yummy recipes for breads, pies, rolls, cakes, candies and cookies? Everyone can get involved in baking and taste testing and the best recipes can be baked for fair this year. You could even include a gift certificate for baking supplies.

While everyone is unwrapping their gifts, take lots of photos and you can enter your best work in the photography section of fair. Or snap photos of Chelsea blanketed in snow this winter.

I took more than 300 photos of children and families during Breakfast with Santa at the Village Conference Center last Saturday. There were some very cute ones, so I might enter a photo or two myself this year.

Remember, there is no fee to enter your exhibits at the Chelsea Community Fair and there are classes for all ages from youth to senior citizens so let your creative side guide you this winter while the weather outside is frightful, before it once again becomes delightful.

And, while you are enjoying this Christmas season with family and friends, please consider making a donation to Chelsea Update to support my efforts to keep the community informed with all the news that’s fit to print about Chelsea.

As a reminder, this is a one-person operation with no corporate support. The staff (my two dogs, Buzz and Ryan) and I truly appreciate your continued support. And we’d like to thank the following people who made recent donations to our efforts.
