Publisher’s message: everything you need to know about Chelsea Community Fair

File photo. Lisa shows a sheep at the Chelsea Community Fair.

As I am shoulder-deep in my 19th year covering the Chelsea Community Fair for various publications, by far the most fun I’ve had doing so is while providing readers with everything they need to know on ChelseaUpdate.com for the weeks leading up to and during fair.

Sometimes those stories are from a personal perspective such as when I accepted an invitation to show a lamb, a pig and a dairy cow– usually reserved for “future” showmen — other times features or news stories or photo galleries.

In previous years, I’ve been dunked in the dunk tank and have judged baking and float entries. This year, I am honored to have been asked to judge three different “things.” (And I can’t wait to get started and follow up with what those were — once fair is complete).

And, I’ve shown cross stitch and vegetables, taking home a few ribbons of my own.

For the past eight years, I have been practically everywhere — covering all the events that make fair special. From the arrival of the livestock to the top showmanship winners.

With the help of several photographers and freelancers, Chelsea Update staff does its best to both preview what’s to come and to cover events visually and in writing. So as you can imagine, August is a very busy month for me. I’m slow responding to folks via email, and everything else, including thanking those who have recently made donations and asking for continued donations toward this coverage, falls by the wayside.

So, here’s a quick reminder to folks that I count on your support to keep providing 365 day a year coverage of all things Chelsea. You can donate via paypal on the homepage of the site or better yet, send a check in any amount made out to Chelsea Update and mailed to 18829 Bush Road, Chelsea, MI 48118.

A huge thank you, once again, to all the advertisers and readers. Below is a list of recent contributors to Chelsea Update. I could not continue without you.

  • Joan and Edward Driscoll
  • Jim and Mary Randolph
  • Mary Green
  • Anonomous
  • Wendy Reinhardt
  • Jenn Ridley
  • Sharwords
  • Pam and Howard Holmes

I also need to send a huge thank you to my friends who make sure I have “provisions” all month, and take turns making sure that Buzz and Ryan are fed, played with, and feel loved while I abandon them for multiple hours during fair week. You know who you are and I couldn’t do this without you.

So in closing, each day this week, we’ll preview what is on tap that day and have lots of photos and stories after the results are in.

I’ll be spending a lot of time at the fairgrounds so look for me there. And most importantly, have a blast during your time at fair this week.
