As Mayor Jason Lindauer said, “You know it’s spring when we talk about farmers’ market.”

That was before the City Council unanimously approved a request by Ashley Miller Helmholdt, the new Farmers’ market coordinator and Bob Pierce, executive director of the Chelsea Area Chamber of Commerce, to again hold the Saturday Farmers’ Market in the library lot on Park Street.

Pierce told the City Council on March 26 that he was pleased to talk about the market because farming is one of the first small businesses in the country.

Miller Helmholdt reminded the City Council about the many programs that are offered at the market for residents that make fresh produce more easily available and affordable for them.

The market has been using parking lot 3 for several years for its Saturday market that runs from 8 a.m.-noon.

City Manager John Hanifan reminded the council that the vendors begin setting up about 7 a.m. and clear the lot by about 1 p.m.

The market is expected to open May 4 and run through Oct. 26.

“I’m very pleased to have the farmers market back again,” said Council Member Frank Hammer.

In addition, Council Member Ann Feeney asked where the Bushel Basket Market would be located this year. Miller Helmholdt said the Wednesday market will return to the hospital grounds in the overflow parking area adjacent to the University of Michigan Family Practice Center off Old US-12, across from the Chelsea Wellness Center.
