Six New Parklets Will Soon Be Found Downtown

By Lisa Carolin

When visiting downtown Chelsea in the near future, keep your eyes open for six new parklets – the sidewalk extensions that are being used to create more seating places for gathering and socializing including restaurant seating.

This was announced at the May 4 Chelsea Parks Commission meeting held via Zoom.

Also discussed was the Letts Creek Linear Park, where Chelsea City Manager John Hanifan said most of the land clearing has been completed by the city. He said heavier equipment will be on site soon to start finer grading of the trail, which is on schedule for a fall opening.

Work on improving the Timbertown sand volley ball courts is expected to begin soon with the city sharing the cost with a local supporter of the courts.

Two Parks Commission members, Sam Angus and Erin Brayton, were recently appointed to the city’s Community Center Task Force. Regular updates on the task force’s work will become part of the Parks Commission agenda.

Parks Commission members talked about Rec-it Tuesdays for the upcoming summer. The Parks Commission hosts the event on Tuesday, Aug. 10 and chose Hoverball archery as well as a scavenger hunt and plant identification options for the activities.

The Parks Commission’s next meeting will be June 8 via Zoom.
