UMRC awarded Richard F. Huegli Award for program excellence

The Community Foundation for Southeast Michigan recently announced that United Methodist Retirement Communities (UMRC) is the recipient of the 2013 Richard F. Huegli Award for Program Excellence.

The award recognizes a nonprofit organization in southeast Michigan that has a history of achieving excellence in human services programming, according to a press release. It celebrates Huegli’s legacy of vision, high standards for programming excellence and belief in human potential.

“On behalf of our board of directors, I am honored to accept the Richard F. Huegli Award,” said John Thorhauer, UMRC president and CEO, in a press release.

“We have always prided ourselves in providing our residents with the highest quality senior living options and services,” he said, adding, “Receiving this honor is a testimony to the great work of our entire staff over the years.”

The recipient receives a one-time grant of $5,000 to support its general operations.

Huegli, who died in 1988, was an integral figure in the region’s human services sector for nearly half a century, spending 42 years with United Community Services of Metropolitan Detroit, now part of the the United Way for Southeastern Michigan. He later helped to establish the Community Foundation for Southeast Michigan and served as the Foundation’s acting director in its first year of existence.

“Richard F. Huegli possessed a combination of concern for people’s needs, innovation and professional dedication,” said Mariam Noland, president of the Community Foundation for Southeast Michigan. “The staff and supporters of the United Methodist Retirement Communities embody these values everyday in their work with older adults.”

Building on a foundation of more than 100 years of service, UMRC is a faith-based, non-profit organization that promotes the wellness, dignity and independence of older adults by providing high quality, innovative and compassionate senior residential care services across Southeast Michigan.
