United Way of Chelsea dissolving; county group expanding its coverage

(Chelsea Update would like to thank Saudia Santure for the information in this story.)

After 66 years, the United Way of Chelsea is dissolving, with United Way of Washtenaw County expanding its coverage area to include residents of Chelsea.

“The great thing about our Chelsea community is that there are so many people willing to give – People in this community care about each other, and their neighbors,” said Board President Saudia Santure in a press release.

“The United Way of Washtenaw County has always been an ally and support for our all-volunteer board, and it’s time for us to let them do what they do best,” she said.

The United Way of Washtenaw County is focused on mental health, and ensuring residents of the county are cared for during times of crisis.

Valerie Kenning, CFO United Way of Washtenaw County and resident of Chelsea, is a strong supporter of both entities. She has four children who all attended Chelsea Schools. “I’m thrilled to be able to now say that I can help people in my hometown.”

In their last year of giving, the Chelsea United Way was able to fund their member agencies – Chelsea Faith in Action, Chelsea Senior Center, Washtenaw Area Value Express (WAVE), Chelsea Education Foundation, Chelsea Early Childhood Education Center, and the St. Louis Center.
