Varsity, JV cross country teams begin season with relay win

ChelseaBulldogsLogoGoldTrim(Chelsea Update would like to thank Men’s Cross Country Coach Eric Swager for the information in this story.)

The Chelsea varsity and JV cross country teams got the season off on the right foot at the Michigan Center Hay Bale Relay on Aug. 23 at Ella Sharp Park.

“The Chelsea A team held on for the overall championship, a nice accomplishment,” said Eric Swager, men’s cross-country coach.

Individually, he said, Jacob Stubbs and David Trimas were outstanding, and all varsity guys had solid efforts.

The Chelsea A team won the 4 x 3 km relay in a time of 41:39, while the Chelsea C team was fourth in a time of 42:26. Ten schools competed in the race.

The Chelsea A splits were:

David Trimas – 9:44

Adam Bowersox – 10:44

Joe Vermilye  –  10:18

Bram Parkinson – 10:53

The Chelsea C splits were:

Jacob Stubbs – 9:35

Matt Proegler – 11:04

Jack Abernethy – 10:44

Kyle McGregor – 11:04

“This is always a fun way to start the competitive season,” said Swager, who added, “For the varsity race, I tried to split the top guys into two equal squads, and for 90 percent of the race, the guys were 1-2 in the team race.”

Here are the JV results:

1.  Miles Fischer  –  10:30

2.  Ben Koch –  10:36

4. Roy Schmidt – 11:21

6.  Jack Baylis – 11:41

8.  James Straub –  11:51

9. Liam Heaney – 11:51

11. Mitch Henschel – 11:59

15.  Evan Mongie – 12:06

21. Cole Phillips – 12:25

24.  Josh Cole – 12:32

36.  Jack Bolt – 12:25

54. Reed Aldrich  – 13:17

60. Nich Hoffman – 13:33

64. Austin Reardon, 13:42

68. Dom Gasbarre – 13:57

71. Drew Sujek – 1403

92. Zach Hinderer  – 14:49.

In the JV race, “Miles Fisher and Ben Koch ran away from the field, and had a nice battle for the overall title,” Swager said, adding, “Both guys ran much faster than last year at this meet, and will make a nice challenge to the varsity guys as the season progresses. “

He also noted the performance of freshman Liam Heaney, who finished in the top 10 in his first high school race.

“Many of the guys are already showing improvement , and I like the competitive attitude they are bringing to each practice,” he said. “Overall, a good day for Chelsea.”
