WWRA: Recycle and reuse, don’t dump

(Chelsea Update would like to thank Laura Scriven and the Western Washtenaw Recycling Authority for this story.)

A couple of weeks ago, there was a sofa and a loveseat left at the Western Washtenaw Recycling Authority (WWRA) site on Old Manchester Road. They were very large pieces of furniture, which could (and should) have been reused or recycled at a resale shop.

WWRA cannot do that — we are not set up as a resale shop. The person who left the furniture should have taken the pieces to Goodwill or Purple Heart or another organization equipped to handle used furniture.

Since someone took the time to load them up into their truck; they should have taken them time to make sure they were disposed of properly. Rain and other weather conditions rendered the sofas unusable, and WWRA had to dispose of them, which costs all of us money.

Money that could have been used toward paying off the bonds that taxpayers are billed for, or money that could have been used to improve the facilities.

Luckily, a concerned citizen was at the site when the sofas were being dumped and got photos with partial plates, and there’s an active investigation underway. Once found, the person will be charged with illegal dumping, which carries a large fine.

Please be on the look-out for people dropping off items that are not recyclable. As a community, we need to help take care of each other.
