WWRA: Recycling by the numbers

The new permanent location of the city recycling bins.
The new permanent location of the city recycling bins.

(Chelsea Update would like to thank Laura Scriven and Western Washtenaw Recycling Authority for the information in this column.)

Last week, I talked about how recycling can save you money.

This week, I am giving you the numbers.

  • Americans throw approximately 35 tons of 16 ounce plastic bottles away each hour.
  • One recycled ton of plastic bottles can save enough energy to run a two-person home for a year.
  • Recycling one aluminum can saves enough energy to power a TV for three hours.
  • One recycled glass jar can power an 11 watt CFL bulb for 20 hours.
  • One ton of recycled cardboard saves 46 gallons of oil.

In the past, I have talked about how recycling helps Western Washtenaw Recycling Authority reduce household assessments and generate money for more projects.

This week, I am talking about how recycles saves the country and your household money.  Please don’t throw away your money.
