Four Chelsea High School students qualified as finalists in the Michigan Mathematics Prize Competition. They are Chris Cooley, Dominic Gasbarre, Ethan Pfeiffer, and Josie Surrel.

They are among the top students who competed in the Part 1 Exam of the Michigan Mathematics Prize Competition. It was a 40-question multiple choice exam that was given at 130 Michigan high schools in October.

Chelsea High School math teacher Lonnie Mitchell said, “It’s quite an accomplishment.”

The Part 2 Exam will be given on Dec. 7 and will consist of five challenging problems. Students must write solutions to the problems along with mathematical proofs (explanations) justifying their claims are correct.

Mathematicians from the 70 colleges and universities that make up the Michigan Section of the Mathematical Association of America will grade the exams at a session at Albion College Jan.14, 2017.

Students with the top 100 scores on the two parts will be honored at an awards banquet March 11, 2017 at Eastern Michigan University, and the top 50 scores will be presented with scholarships ranging from $250 to $2,500.
