It’s an annual tradition for Beach Middle School eighth-grade students to go to Washington, D.C. at the end of April. The goal is that every student who wants to participate is able to make the trip.
This school year, the trip costs $775 per student. As it has done in previous years, Beach is accepting scholarship applications from families who need some help with that cost.
Ten families have submitted applications and been approved, and now Beach is trying to raise $7,750.
“In past years, funding for the scholarships came from the community,” said Sue Jacobs, a Certified Public Accountant in Chelsea, who encourages supporters to join the Facebook site It Only Takes 5. ”Parents and local service club members usually make up about half of the funding need with the other half from grant money.”
However, this year the grant money is not available. That’s why Beach Middle School Principal Nick Angel is reaching out to the community for help.
“We want every student who is interested in attending the annual Washington, DC trip to have this opportunity regardless of financial hurdles,” said Angel. “Scholarships have allowed this amazing opportunity to happen for many of our students each year. I am so very grateful for Sue Jacobs and the Chelsea Community for selecting our students for targeted support.”
As of Feb. 3, $2,870 had been raised from the community, but more contributions are needed. Beach is hoping to receive funds by Feb.10.
“If you would like to make a contribution to fund these eighth-grade student scholarships, please make your check out to Beach Middle School with “D.C. Trip” in the memo,” said Jacobs. “Checks can be dropped off to the office or mailed to 445 Mayer Dr., Chelsea, MI 48118.”
Jacobs says 100 percent of every dollar contribution will go directly toward these scholarships. Any amount would be gratefully appreciated.
