The Chelsea Area Garden Club (CAGC) will award a limited number of grants of $500 or less this spring to local nonprofit organizations or individuals for horticulture-related projects.

Projects should align with the club’s goals: Promote gardening, community beautification, and environmentally responsible horticultural practices and conservation through education in the Chelsea area.

Applications and information about the garden club’s annual grant program are available here or by calling Charlene Harris at 433-9773.

Mail applications to the CAGC Grant Program, P.O. Box 519, Chelsea, MI 48118. Applications must be postmarked by Feb. 28.

Applicants who live in the CAGC service area, primarily western Washtenaw County, will be given preference.  Not every applicant may receive funding.

Grant recipients report on their projects at the garden club’s noon meeting Oct. 13 at Chelsea First United Methodist Church.

The garden club awarded more than $3,700 in scholarships and grants in 2013.

Recipients included the Chelsea Senior Center for its Intergenerational Garden, the St. Louis Center in Chelsea for its Tranquility Garden and Growing Hope organization in Ypsilanti. Scholarships were awarded to four students in the Michigan State University Organic Farmer Training Program. The club also donated two scholarships for students in the Washtenaw County Master Gardener Program.

The club raises money for horticulture–related grants and scholarships and for civic beautification through its spring plant sale. The plant sale will be held 8 a.m.-noon May 10 at a location to be determined.
