Three members of the Chelsea Area Players (CAP) — Clara Smith, Vicky Wurster and Don Paulsell — were at St. Joseph Mercy Chelsea Thursday morning carrying a very large check.
Wurster, secretary of the board and Paulsell, treasurer of the board, as well as Smith, a long-time board member, presented a $3,000 donation from the group to the hospital’s new cancer center.
Smith said that CAP and the hospital have had a “wonderful relationship” throughout the years and they’ve presented a lot of dinner shows in the hospital cafeteria.
Additionally, CAP, Jr., for youth actors, made a $300 donation to the cancer center about a year and a half ago, she said.
“We wanted to do something,” Smith said. “We all know someone who has had cancer and the board wanted to give a donation so more people can enjoy life and the fine arts.”
“I’m very excited that Chelsea will have a cancer center,” said Paulsell, before the donation was given to Nancy Graebner, hospital CEO and president, and Judy Stratman, director of development and marketing Thursday morning.

“Every contribution is important to the cancer program,” Graebner said, adding that the project is not only on budget but also on schedule to open in early spring 2015.
She said that the infusion and medical oncology areas are expected to open in January, 2015 and the radiation oncology and therapy area is expected to open in the spring.
