(Chelsea Update would like to thank Virginia Kreuger for the information in this story.)
Did you know that 50 years ago, when the country celebrated its bicentennial, a committee in Chelsea buried a time capsule under the library lawn with instructions to open it 50 years later?
The instructions have been saved in the library’s safe.
This summer is the country’s 250th anniversary and on June 26 from 5-7 p.m., an All American Picnic is planned at the library during which time the capsule will be unearthed.
As such, the library is searching for descendants of the families involved in this time capsule burial to share their stories and collect whatever treasures are found inside. If you are one of those people, please stop by the library or call Virginia Kreuger at 734-475- 8732. She is part of a committee planning this special celebration.
According to the instructions from the Chelsea Bicentennial Committee, the baby born to a Chelsea family closest to the time capsule burial was named the “keeper of the key.” That special person is Jayme Ayn Bollinger (neé Spears) and the library has been in contact with her to help do the honors.
The community is invited to celebrate both the country’s 250th anniversary and witness the opening of the time capsule, and more information will follow closer to the actual event.
