Chelsea City Council OK’s temporary new location for farmers market

By Lisa Carolin

The Chelsea Farmers Market will open in its new location, in the library parking lot (between the Chelsea District Library and the Chelsea First United Methodist Church) beginning Saturday, May 6.

The Chelsea City Council unanimously approved a special event permit for the use of that parking lot, which was the previous location of the farmers market before it moved to the Palmer Lot on South Main Street.

The Palmer Lot will be undergoing some changes, which will be the subject of a public hearing at the city council’s March 20 meeting. Renderings of the lot show more green space as well as a stage area.

The council also approved a special event permit for the Monitor Ball Club to use the park at Timbertown. Monitor Team Captain Jon Van Hoek told the board, “This is our seventh season, and I’m excited to bring this unique community event to town,” he said.

The Council also agreed to set a work session for 6 p.m. March 13 at City Council Chambers to discuss a Lima Township development and possible 425 agreement.

William De Groot with the Ann Arbor Transit Authority, made a presentation at the meeting. He talked about declining ridership on the Chelsea Express bus, which he blamed on more people working from home and lower gasoline prices. He said that AATA service is increasing on the west side of Ann Arbor and that this August, service to Baker Road will be offered every half hour.

There was also a presentation by Autumn Orta with the annual Heart and Sole Race, which will take place Saturday, May 20 from 8 a.m.-1 p.m. It’s the 28th annual race, and she said last year there were close to 800 participants and volunteers. The council approved road closures for that day.

The event includes a two mile run, a 5K run/walk, a 10K run, and a 13.8 mile bike race. Proceeds will benefit the Behavioral Health Services of St. Joseph Mercy Chelsea.
