Chelsea DDA holds last meeting of the year

The Chelsea Downtown Development Authority (DDA) board held its final meeting of the year on Dec. 20 and discussed several aspects of its financial position (included below in its annual report).

City Manager John Hanifan reviewed the DDA’s tax increment financing calculation for 2017-2018, the debt service schedule, the 2017-1018 budget and the June 2018 cash summary report.

In addition, a discussion of parking and the gate blocking a driveway at Palmer Commons included a reminder to residents that because of MDOT regulations, there is no flow-through traffic and parking is only currently available on the south side of the location. Visitors must enter and exit from the same opening. The other one is blocked by a gate.

The primary use for the north side of the commons has not been determined – so the asphalt has not been striped for parking. The DDA wants to allow the community the greatest flexibility in the use of this community space.

The DDA also set a work session for Jan. 10.

Chelsea Area Chamber of Commerce Director Monica Monsma commended the DDA on the Palmer Commons. “It looks great and the Santa mailbox (in the front of the property) is getting great comments.”

She said that Paul Schissler was selected as the new chamber board of director’s president and that Rick Eder, Matt Mason and Jon Curtis have joined the chamber board.

She reminded folks to nominate either a large or small business for the annual business leadership awards. The deadline for nominations is Jan. 4. The annual meeting where the large and small business leadership award winners will be honored is planned for Feb. 21.

Monsma said there will be a chamber breakfast on Jan. 24 at the Comfort Inn and Village Conference Center and registration will be open soon.

The DDA board also set a work session for Jan. 10 at 7:30 a.m., the Thursday before the monthly business meeting, which takes place on Jan. 17 at 7:30 a.m. in the municipal building inside the city council chambers.
