The Chelsea girls’ tennis team tied Trenton to take home the regional championship with 25 points on May 16.

“This is a first for the Chelsea Girls tennis program,” said coach Matt Pedlow, adding that for Trenton, it’s the team’s second straight regional championship.

The winners in each flight are as follows:

1 singles: Brittany Vinca of Trenton d. Veronika Vrbova of Airport 6-3, 6-3

2 S: Lauren Solvano (T) d. Sarah Baumgartner (Air) 6-1, 6-4

3 S Elle Kersten (T) d. E.J. Lin (Chelsea) 6-3, 6-3

Divine Child- 12
South Lyon East- 11
Milan- 5
Adrian- 4
New Boston Huron- 3
Annapolis- 2
Romulus-0

“The girls played great today, I don’t think most people thought they would win the regional championship by tying a very good Trenton team, but they persevered through some tough matches,” Pedlow said.

Chelsea’s 3 singles player, E.J. Lin, provided the spark for the girls by upsetting the #2 ranked Carlton Airport player 6-1, 6-0 and that set the tone for the remainder of matches.

Chelsea ended up having 6 flights in the finals, and Trenton ended up with 7 flights in the final round. Chelsea and Trenton went head to head in five of those flights, with Chelsea winning three and Trenton taking two.

Our 1 singles player Katie Lee played her best tennis of the year today, and lost to a very good Carlton Airport exchange student from the Czech Republic, Pedlow said. “ Katie played great tennis, but her opponent was a strong hitter and could counter Katie’s rallies.”

“Our doubles all played great today and we came close to sweeping the doubles flights, but 2 doubles ran into a well coached 2 doubles team from Trento,” Pedlow said, adding, “I thought our 3 and 4 doubles played some of their best tennis this season today when it counted the most.”

Now it’s off to states at Kalamazoo College on May 30.
