Some Chelsea business owners turned the town gold over Black Friday weekend to benefit the Chelsea School District.

Chelsea Gold is a 15-year tradition when shopping local helps to support the schools. Representatives from the schools accepted a check from Kevin Frahm, owner of Global Marketplace, on Friday, Nov. 30.

Since Frahm along with Susan Whitmarsh, owner of Breathe Yoga, helped lead the money raising effort, they each chose a teacher who had a lot of impact on their children to receive the check.

High School band director Rick Catherman and Choir Director Steve Hinz were their choices, and the two music teachers stopped by Global Marketplace Nov. 30 to accept the check, which they will present to school district administrators.

“It’s very generous,” said Catherman. “I talk to students about how important it is to be a part of the community and encourage them to build community.”

“I’m very honored by the donation,” said Hinz. “This is a great place to be a teacher.”

Frahm said that Black Friday weekend was chosen because business is so good that weekend.

“Each business that participates promotes Chelsea Gold on social media and puts gold balloons outside their door,” said Frahm. “It’s up to each business how much it wants to donate.”

It will be up to school district administrators to determine how the donation is spent.
