Both the Chelsea School District’s Varsity and Junior Varsity Quiz Bowl teams are proving to be at the top of their game this season.

The regular season ended earlier this month with the varsity team winning the Tri-County League Tournament 7-0. The team also won the regular season 8-1 for the third year in a row, and won the Holland Invitational 9-0 earlier in the season.

The varsity team is Charles Budd, Daniel Budd, Peter Fredenberg, Forrest Gorby, Haley Hilgendorf, Chase Seaberg and Evan Sing (Eric Cameron participated in the league tournament and will also attend the state tournament).

The team is taking some weeks off before preparing for the state tournament, which takes place on April 9 online.

“While we have aspirations of winning a state title, we’ve finished third and second in the last two held,” said team member Eric Sing. “I think what has set this team apart from others in our league is the willingness of individuals to put in the effort to learn something new that they wouldn’t normally be interested in or be taught in school. It also takes the confidence to buzz in and the ability to move on when you get a question wrong.”

The NAQT National Championships are in Atlanta May 27-30.

Meanwhile, Chelsea’s JV Quiz Bowl team finished the regular season with an 8-1 record and was league co-champions with Saline. The JV team won the Holland Invitational (7-2).  These were the first ever league and tournament championships for a CHS JV Quiz Bowl team.

The JV team is Eric Cameron, Emily Gagnon, Tallulah Gorby, Luke Mourad, Alex Rogers, Zak Sing and Charlotte Tierney.

The JV titles have qualified Chelsea’s Quiz Bowl team for the National Academic Championships with preliminaries on May 21 and 22 and playoffs on June 10.
