Chelsea Human Rights Commission finalizes work plan

By Lisa Carolin

The Chelsea Human Rights Commission unanimously approved its work plan for 2019 at its March 6 meeting.

Members hope to get the work plan on Chelsea City Council’s March 18 agenda.

Based on a significant number of responses to the HRC’s survey from people living outside of Chelsea, HRC Member Rod Anderson reported that the question was raised at a recent Chelsea Community Forum about non-residents becoming members of the HRC.

The bylaws state that only residents of Chelsea can be appointed to the HRC.

HRC member Susan Morrel-Samuels said she encourages people from the townships to attend the HRC meetings, and HRC member Dan Kaminsky said he’d like to see the HRC meetings be more open and give members of the public who attend the meetings the chance to become part of the conversation.

HRC members voted unanimously to request that Anderson give their feedback to the Chelsea Community Forum.

In other action, the HRC chose its new slate of officers: Morrel-Samuels is the chair; Kaminsky is vice chair; Anderson is secretary.

The HRC’s newest member, Joanne Ladio, attended her first meeting.

There is still one vacancy on the HRC, and information can be found at http://city-chelsea.org.

The HRC meets the first Wednesday of the month at 6 p.m. in City Council Chambers. The next meeting is April 3.
