Chelsea Kiwanis to hear about Huron Clinton Metroparks

(Chelsea Update would like to thank Bob Milbrodt for the information in this story.)

This Monday, the Chelsea Kiwanis Club will hear from Kim Fix, community outreach/marketing coordinator at Huron Clinton Metroparks.

There are 13 beautiful parks along the Huron and Clinton rivers covering 25,000 acres in Livingston, Macomb, Oakland, Washtenaw, and Wayne counties. Opportunities for community members include: volunteering, team building activities, and free and low-cost events.

Last Monday, Ron Hagan from the Kiwanis of Michigan Foundation told club members that a grandfather was visiting his ailing granddaughter at C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital (what was then the University of Michigan Hospital). He realized that, although she was receiving excellent medical care, the Kiwanian grandfather wanted more for his granddaughter.

He was concerned her educational needs were not being met.

In 1922, the Kiwanis Club of Ann Arbor established a school and recreational program for the hospitalized children. From that visit more than 95 years ago, the Kiwanis of Michigan Foundation has evolved to what it is today. The support the foundation gives can take many forms, but it is designed to ease the anxieties and speed the recovery of hospitalized children.

Two popular programs at Mott are music therapy and virtual reality gaming for the kids.

The club meeting begins each Monday at 6:15 p.m. in the St. Joseph Mercy Chelsea Hospital cafeteria, and the speakers begin at about 6:45 p.m. Everyone is invited to the club’s meetings to learn about Kiwanis.
