Last Monday, the club heard from Allen Cole, owner of Cole Funeral Chapel. He spoke about a topic that most people don’t want to think about … what happens to us when we die.

Because of this natural reluctance, many families are faced with numerous choices for the disposition of their loved one as they are experiencing the shock and grief of the loss. That probably is not the best time to make important decisions.

When Allen Cole bought the business from his father, Don, the choices were whether to have a traditional funeral with burial or cremation. Roughly 80 percent chose burial, and 20 percent of people chose cremation. Now, Allen Cole says it is 50/50, and the cookie-cutter services that most funeral directors provided in the past have been expanded exponentially.

Some of the choices include natural or green burial with no embalming, casket, or concrete vault. Some families choose the traditional 2-day viewing with a funeral service and burial following. Others opt for immediate burial or cremation followed by a memorial service. One member of Monday’s audience told of a father who wanted to have his ashes sent up in fireworks; the family had it done.

Allen Cole said he will spend the time needed to satisfy each family’s wishes. With so many choices, that process can take some time and effort. A take-away from Allen’s talk is the importance of thinking about this unpleasant decision ahead of time.
