Chelsea Parks and Rec Kicking off ‘Rec It’ Tuesdays

By Lisa Carolin

Rec It Tuesdays kick off next week on June 15 with a self-led scavenger hunt at the Storybook Trail at Baker Woods sponsored by the Chelsea District Library.

That information was shared with Chelsea Parks and Recreation Commission members at the June 8 meeting held via Zoom.

All activities are free and open to all and the activities will alternate between Rec It Tuesdays and Trail Tuesdays. The Parks Commission will sponsor the event on Tuesday, Aug. 10, when activities will include Hoverball archery, gaga ball, volleyball, a scavenger hunt and plant identification – all taking place at Timbertown.

Chelsea City Manager John Hanifan told Parks Commission members that sand for the volleyball court has been ordered with work on the court to begin as soon as it arrives.

Hanifan said that construction on the Weber Fields/Timbertown roundabout connector is expected to begin in late August with an expected early to mid-fall completion of a trail.

Public input on the Parks Plan amendment process, as well as feedback on the most recent survey results, will take place on July 12 and 14 at local parks including Timbertown, Veterans Park, and Pierce Park.

In other news, the largest parklet created in the City of Chelsea has been completed on Park Street adjacent to Smokehouse 52. The parklets are considered public space and also include a location near Zou Zou’s and the parking lot behind Cottage Rabbit on West Middle St.

Also discussed was the possibility of building permanent outdoor pickle ball courts for Chelsea Senior Center members. Pickle ball players are the senior center’s biggest group, and the senior center is looking for a possible partnership opportunity with the City of Chelsea. Parks Commission member Andrew Thomson, who works for Chelsea Community Education, said that there is preliminary planning for pickle ball courts to be built behind Pierce Lake Elementary School.

The Parks Commission’s next meeting will be July 13 in person at Chelsea City Council Chambers.
