Chelsea Parks Commission discusses Veterans Park

Chelsea Parks Commission members met Tuesday at Veterans Park.

By Lisa Carolin

The Chelsea Parks Commission welcomed new member Kate Mehuron to its June 4 meeting, which took place at Veterans Park and included a walk around Weber Field and Timbertown.

Parks Commission members agree they like the idea of keeping Veterans Park a quiet and reflective park. Some ideas for improvements include enhancing landscaping and adding benches. There was also discussion about the wooden boat structure, which City Manager John Hanifan said would cost more to move than purchasing a new boat would cost. Whether or not to keep the boat is undecided.

Other ideas for improvements include building a better connection between Veterans Park and the Weber baseball fields and using the concession stand building to store baseball equipment. Commission members also talked about using some space just outside the fenced in area of the ball fields as a small dog park.

In the next month or so, work will begin on the Pierce Park Improvement Plan. A dead pine tree needs to be taken down where the new gazebo will be built.

Mayor Melissa Johnson, a member of the Parks Commission, said there was a good turnout for the parks cleanup day on June 1. She also reminded everyone that programming starts June 18 for “Rec It” Tuesdays, and the first event is a pool event at Beach Middle School from 6-8:30 p.m., which is sponsored by Chelsea Community Education.

The Parks Commission will meet next at 9 a.m. on July 9 at the Chelsea Dog Park.
