The Chelsea Parks Commission took care of internal business at its March 1 meeting electing its slate of officers: Shawn Personke, chair; Samuel Angus, vice chair; Kate Mehuron, secretary.

In addition, the commission voted to have a work session Tuesday, March 22, at 9 a.m. to discuss by-laws as well as its 2022-2023 budget. Members will talk about goals and prioritize for an estimated $80,000 budget, including what sort of funding to allocate to specific parks.

One of the parks on a few commission members’ minds is the Chelsea Dog Park. Personke is concerned about the increased amount of dog waste not being picked up especially around the entryway to the park.

Parks Commission member Patrick Muldoon volunteered to do the cleaning up as well as to fill in holes around the park if dirt could be delivered. They also said that more aggressive dogs have been coming to the park and stressed the importance of registering all dogs that go there with the City of Chelsea.

Commission members asked Julia Upfal, community development director, about what’s going on with the annexed property on Freer Road. She said that Chelsea City Council has not designated the land for any purpose at this time and that she is investigating demolishing the farmhouse on the property.

Upfal said that Chelsea’s Community Center Task Force, which meets on March 2 (https://www.city-chelsea.org) may talk about the property.

Also discussed was this summer’s plan for Rec-It Tuesdays, the weekly Tuesday evening events sponsored by various groups around Chelsea including the Parks Commission. Commission members chose July 12 as the date for its Rec-It Tuesday event this summer and will finalize details at its April 5 meeting.
