Heydlauff’s appliance store in downtown Chelsea received permission to expand its showroom at the Chelsea Planning Commission’s April 19 meeting.
Heydlauff’s received approval for a combined preliminary and final site plan located at 107, 107.5, 109, and 113 N. Main St. contingent on all items on the staff report being addressed and additional waivers to be finalized with administrative staff.
Although the building encroaches on property owned by Chelsea Milling Company, Chelsea Milling granted authorization to proceed with planning commission review.

Following a public hearing, Culver’s, located at 1610 S. Main St. ,received approval from the Chelsea Planning Commission for a special land use permit and site plan amendment for the addition of two 32 square foot order booths to the existing restaurant. The purpose is to ease some of the congestion and increase efficiency.
At least half a dozen people spoke during public comment during the meeting about a proposal made by the Riemco building company at the planning commission’s last work session regarding a proposal for Park and East Streets. According to Julia Upfal, Community Development Director, the discussion was intended to be preliminary to determine whether the planning commission would be receptive to a multi-family dwelling at that site.
She said the proposal includes the demolition of an historic home, which happened to be the family home of Rob Riemenschneider, owner of Riemco, who explained efforts Riemco went through to consider renovation before they determined a demo would be necessary. Upfal also said that zoning compliance will be imperative to get through the planning commission.
Many neighbors are concerned about the density of such a structure. Riemenschneider told the planning commission at the April 19 meeting that there is no plan and no design at this time and that he wants to hold a community forum to work with neighbors.
