Chelsea Police Chief Ed Toth Announces Retirement

Police Chief Ed Toth formally announced his retirement at the Feb. 22 Chelsea City Council meeting, which was accepted with regret by the Chelsea City Council.

He said that after about 15 years on the job, the time was right to retire this summer and he wanted to give the city plenty of time to hire a new chief.

Toth said the department had come a long way in the time he’d been in the job, which began in a moldy old building to the four-year project of updating all the traffic control orders to it becoming a more professional department.

“Thank you for leaving things better than you found them,” Council Member Peter Feeney told the chief.

Toth’s last day on the job will be Aug. 15.

In other council business, Richard (Dick) Dice was unanimously re-appointed to the Chelsea Board of Review for a 3-year term through January 2025.

Both Chelsea Farmers Markets were given unanimous approval to resume this spring.

The Wednesday market will take place from 1-5 p.m. in the Chelsea State Bank parking lot at 1010 S. Main St. from May 4-Oct. 26.

The Saturday market will take place from 8 a.m.-1 p.m. in Palmer Commons from April 30-Oct. 29.

The City Council was given an overview of the Human Rights Commission’s annual report and its 2022 plan, which can be found at the end of this story. Both were unanimously approved.

The city’s water department was given unanimous approval to replace a high service pump at the water plant at a cost of about $9,700 and the electric department was given unanimous approval for a purchase order to lock in a price of about $499,600 for a new transformer that’s the first step in an upgrade to the Industrial substation that’s expected to take place in the FY 2023-2024.

The City Council approved budget amendments for FY 2021-2022.
