Chelsea School District voters approve $81 million bond

Voters in the Chelsea School District approved an $81 million bond proposal on Nov. 5 by an unofficial vote totals of 2,311 to 1,531.

It passed in Chelsea 1,028 to 349 and in Dexter Township 272 to 190 votes.

Lima Township voters approved the proposal as well – 259-248 and Lyndon Township voters also approved the request, 309-280,

Sharon Township voters cast their approval, 25-20.

The request was not approved in Sylvan Township where voters turned it down 376-371 or in Freedom Township where voters turned it down 21-11. Jackson County voters also turned it down, 47-36.

“On behalf of the Chelsea School District, I would like to thank our voters for their continuous support of the District,” Superintendent of Schools Julie Helber wrote in a letter on Nov. 6.

“You have prioritized education time and time again and we want you to know we are so grateful,” she wrote, adding, “This bond will protect our District for years to come.”

Helber wrote, “Now that the excitement of the campaign is over, we will start the process of prioritizing the work to be done. We will use our facilities and program assessments to guide us in this process.  More immediate needs will be prioritized in this first phase.  You will see some work this summer, with bigger projects needing more time to plan and execute.

“With your vote, you have made it possible for us to address the needs of the District and we thank you so much for your support,” Helber said.
