Chelsea teachers expected to begin school year without a contract with the district

(Publisher’s note: The teachers were working on a 2-year contract. The error has been corrected.)

The Chelsea Education Association and the Chelsea School District have not yet reached a contract agreement for the 2014-15 school year.

The teachers’ 2-year contract expired on June 30 and the Board of Education has had numerous closed sessions following board meetings regarding the contract.

“The CEA believes that a strong contract will provide the foundation for the Chelsea School District to continue to retain and attract quality educators, which benefits our students,” said Rick Catherman, union president in a press release.

The release states, Chelsea teachers continue to lead the way for the high student test scores the district is credited with. North Creek and South Meadows elementary schools have been recognized by the state as Reward Schools and all four Chelsea School Buildings have scored  in the Top 10 percentile.

“Our goal is to have a new contract in place before students start school on Sept. 2,” Catherman said, adding, “It doesn’t seem likely, but we will continue to work with the Chelsea School Board to come to an agreement as soon as possible.”

Catherman said, “Our students will continue to be our top priority. Our members want to focus on educating the students of the Chelsea community knowing we have the support of our Board of Education.”

It’s unknown what point or points in the contract are causing an impasse.
