(Publisher’s note:  Reader Judy Oake suggested a series of stories focusing on the folks who work at local businesses and who are outstanding employees.  Here’s the first installment and we welcome your recommendations at [email protected].)

By Lisa Carolin

Jan Gaken is one of those star employees, although she recently retired from her job as  business office manager for the United Methodist Retirement Communities.

Her boss, John Thorhauer, president and CEO, UMRC, Inc., says she has been a dedicated employee.

Gaken has spent 14 and a half years working for the UMRC and her responsibilities have included ensuring the billing software database is updated, executing monthly billing, keeping accounts receivable current, answering field resident and family questions, and preparing and sending annual rate and tax letters.

“Without question it is the resident and family interaction I have enjoyed the most,” said Gaken, whose office is on the second floor of the old Glazier building.

“I truly feel it has been a privilege to work in their home on a daily basis and be a small part of our residents’ lives.”

She says that many of the residents have played important roles in society and have fascinating stories to share.

“I believe in UMRC’s mission, and I see it lived out in some way every day,” said Gaken.

“This is truly a special place and it will be a part of my heart forever for many reasons.”

Gaken’s last day of work was Friday, Jan. 16 so when you see her around town be sure to wish her a happy retirement.
