Chelsea varsity golf recap

The Chelsea High School golf team got last week started on a cold and very windy day (with a little rain thrown in for fun) on Monday, April 28 at a Tournament at Baypointe Golf Club where they finished 12th out of 19 teams.

It’s a golf course with water everywhere, and to try to navigate it in 20-to 30-mile per hour winds was quite the challenge. Scoring for Chelsea: Jacob Hauser with an 85, JJ Duncan 87, Sean Lyons 89, and Zach McKinley with a 90, for a final score of 351.

On Wednesday, April 30, the Bulldogs hosted Saline and Pioneer at Reddeman Farms. Final scores for the match were Saline with 159, Pioneer at 171, and Chelsea with a 174.

“Saline was quite a way out in front, but we knew we were in a very tight match with Pioneer,” said coach Joe Ewald, who added, “We are always preaching that every shot counts, and this was the perfect example of how a match could be flipped, if the guys could have found a way to save just one shot a piece. “

Leading the way for Chelsea was McKinley with a 42, Duncan shot 43, Hauser 44, and Teddy Darr had a 45.

On Thursday, May 1, Chelsea played in one of my favorite events of the year, The Gull Lake Invitational at Bedford Valley Golf Course, Ewald said. “It is always a great event with some of the top teams on the west side of the state, on a big strong golf course.”

Once again, cold and extreme winds made the course very difficult. Chelsea shot a final score of 358.

“I was hoping we would go a little lower as we have been trending in the right direction, but on that course, in those conditions, the score was not too bad,” the coach said.

Scoring for the Bulldogs were Duncan with an 86, McKinley 89, Hauser 91, and Michael Purdy with a 92.

To finish out a very busy week, the team played in an Invitational at Hudson Mills on May 3.

“We finished with a final score of 346, our best score of the year,” Ewald said.

Hudson Mills is not the toughest course on our schedule, and the conditions on Saturday were a little more favorable then we have been dealing with most of the season, he said.

“We are always faced with different courses in different conditions, and the final score may not be the only measure of success, but we will take a lower score anytime we can get it.”

The final scores for Chelsea were Purdy and Slusser with a pair of 84’s and Blake Salgat and Lyons had a pair of 89’s.
