Chelsea’s Side Street Garage open, under new ownership

By Lisa Carolin

The Side Street Garage in Chelsea is under new ownership. Peter and Debra Becker are the new owners. They officially took over the garage, which is located at 121 Buchanan St., on Oct. 7.

“We do not plan any changes in Side Street Garage’s past policies and practices,” said Peter Becker. “The biggest difference customers will notice will be a fresh coat of paint in the very near future.”

The couple operated a shop in Dexter for 16 years, then purchased their own shop in Ann Arbor.

“After many successful years in Ann Arbor, we wanted to get back into a small town environment and really connected with the way that Dan and Bobbie ran their business and treated their customers,” said Peter Becker.

He is referring to Dan and Bobbie Hoffenbecker, the previous Side Street Garage owners, who decided to retire. They operated the garage for 23 years and specialized in general maintenance and auto repair as well as vintage cars and selling tires.

The Beckers, along with their 3-year-old son Axel Becker, live in Gregory. Peter Becker grew up in Ann Arbor, and Debra Becker grew up in Hell. They still own an auto repair shop in Saline called Pete’s Auto Service.

“I have been repairing automobiles and managing auto repair businesses since 1994,” said Peter Becker.

How do they feel about owning a business in Chelsea? They are glad and say the Chelsea Community reminds them of Dexter, and they are happy that it’s close to their home in Gregory.

They can be reached at 734-475-2278.
