This past week the Chelsea High School Varsity quiz bowl team won five games including a thrilling double overtime win over Saline to finish the regular season and win the Tri-County Quiz Bowl league.

This is the 4th league championship in the last 5 years and the 3rd perfect record over that span.

On Wednesday, Chelsea hosted a Quad with Dexter, Howell, and Saline. In the first game, Chelsea pulled away in the second half from a feisty Dexter squad to win 260-170. Clara Fredenberg and Eric Cameron paced the Bulldogs with 4 and 3 tossups respectively.  Alex Rogers and Nathan Polens each contributed 2.

In the second game against Howell, Chelsea pulled ahead early and held off a late rally to win 300-240.  Again, Fredenberg (4), Cameron (3) and Rogers (2) led the team.

In the last game of the afternoon, Chelsea faced off against their biggest rival Saline.  It was an exciting back and forth match that never saw either team lead by more than 20 points. The score was tied when the final question was read. Neither team was able to answer so the game went into overtime (the first overtime game in varsity history).

After an extremely difficult poetry question went unanswered, the team went to a second overtime. Everyone went for their buzzer at once with Cameron beating everyone and screaming “Daylight Savings!”.  Chelsea wins 270-260.  Fredenberg and Polens led the Bulldogs with 4 tossups each.

On Thursday, Chelsea took 2 games from Milan 250-150 and 290-100.  Jack Jordan was a substitute in the second game and went 3 for 3 on tossups.

While Fredenberg, Cameron, Polens and Rogers were the starters for the entire season, a total of 12 players contributed to the perfect season including Jack Jordan, Peyton Kifer, Charlotte Tierney, Doug Beechey, Leo Baushke, Gio Bickle, Caleb Grimm and Zak Sing.

CHS Quiz Bowl will play their league tournament on Feb. 12.  The Class B State Championship is April 12 and the NAQT National Championship is May 24-26 in Atlanta, GA.
