Concerns raised about possible dog park location

Chelsea logo 2At a recent Chelsea City Council meeting, a local cattle farmer raised some serious concerns about a proposed location for the city’s dog park.

His legally-zoned cattle ranching enterprise is located immediately adjacent to the proposed dog park location near the city’s Waste Water Treatment plant on the north side of the city.

Among his concerns were: a dog park in such close proximity to a cattle enterprise creates a hazard, which could result in serious injury and/or death to dogs and dog park participants. Dogs can cause cattle to charge, which no fence will stop, once a stampede has begun. Even a small dog can spook cattle.

The safety of the dog park visitors cannot be guaranteed, he said, and he contacted other local farmers who agree with his assessment.

Other concerns include legal hunting is allowed on adjacent land throughout the year as well and he said there is no access for police surveillance and emergency personnel if needed at the site.

The proposed parking would be at an elementary school that is about .4 miles from the dog park and dog annoyance, danger and barking dogs would take place close to the school.
