County Parks Gives Update on Chelsea Border-to-Border Trail Segment

By Lisa Carolin

The next segment of the Border-to-Border (B2B) Trail in Chelsea will get started in February.

That’s what Washtenaw County Parks and Recreation representatives said during a Jan. 26 meeting via Zoom to share information with residents.

Roy Townsend, Washtenaw County Parks and Recreation projects manager, gave some history on the B2B trail eventually focusing on the most recently added segments in and around Chelsea.

The next trail segment will run from M-52 and Werkner Road to the intersection of M-52 and Sibley Road, a total of 1.6 miles. The trail will be located on the west side of M-52 for .5 miles and will then head southwest to the City of Chelsea crossing Sibley Road to Timbertown Park, pass by Letts Creek and Weber fields, and go east to Veterans Parks.

The project will begin in February with the removal of vegetation.

Trees will be removed by March 31 before protected bats return to the area.

Private contractors will then bid on the project, which should tentatively start in June or July and be completed in October.

Residents were invited to ask questions following the presentation, a few of which dealt with the specific location of the trail along Sibley Road and how residents might be affected.

Townsend said that landscaping is planned after the trail is complete and that no lighting is planned for that section of the trail.
