Devil’s Haircut recently held a fundraiser called “Mask My Roots” during which owner Lynae MacLellan gave away hair color to her clients, for a suggested donation of $6.
The event raised more than $1,700 and MacLellan teamed up with a local artist, Brenda Fineman of Geek Crafty, who sewed 300 masks that were given to local businesses getting ready to open up in the new world.
“We teamed up with Brenda Fineman, owner Geek Crafty, for the mask production and the Chelsea Area Chamber of Commerce for the distribution,” MacLellan said via email.

After salons and barbershops were told they had to close due to Covid-19, MacLellan said, “clients of Devil’s Haircut and the Chelsea community reached out to them, bought gift cards, left amazing reviews, checked on them through email and text and social media.”
When the governor’s stay at home order was extended, MacLellan said she felt like clients could use a pick-me-up. Since she had a full color inventory that she used for classes and teaching, she got the word out, donated the products to loyal Devil’s Haircut color clients who had been “rooting” for them. Although there was a suggested donation, she said that it was just a suggestion because she knew different people were facing different economic situations.
And, as an ambassador for the Chelsea Area Chamber of Commerce, she wanted to help local businesses by paying it forward. So, Devil’s Haircut teamed up with Geek Crafty for the production and the chamber for the distribution of masks.
MacLellan said her salon gave away all of the tools clients needed to color their roots. Each person received up to 3 oz. of color with developer, instructions including a video demonstration, gloves, and a bowl and brush.
She said staff conducted a curbside pickup on Wednesday, April 29, and the masks were delivered to local businesses such as WAVE, Silver Maples, Ballet Chelsea and more.
