(Chelsea Update would like to thank Troop Leader Nicole McMichael and Assistant Leader Ellen Neesen-Bosscher for the photos and the information in this article).

Besides being really cool, owls are important to our environment.

They make great backyard friends and they don’t even eat the birdseed. Their call or hoot is lovely to hear in the early morning or dusk. They like to live in hollowed-out large trees, but more and more large trees are not available due to environmental and habitat changes.

Dexter Daisy Troop 40145 began a service project called “Between Earth and Sky,” a unit on conservation, taking care of the earth and our world around us. They wanted to make a difference to the environment. It was their mission to make owl houses along with researching an informational guide.

The 12 Daisy’s each made an owl box, with some adult assistance, and studied owls and where they could place the boxes locally. This project was to encourage the establishment of barn owls in Southeast Michigan where they have be missing for a number of years.

“In an important bridging-to-brownie ceremony, last month, the handmade boxes and fact sheets were returned to each girl. Leslie Science Center will be helping place the houses and will check in and see if any barn owls have come to roost in them over the coming months and years,” Neesen-Bosscher said.

Congratulations to all the Daisy’s of Troop 40145 for working to improve the local environment and helping to bring barn owls to our area, and for advancing to brownies.
