The Chelsea Community Fair will host a new event this August — the Diesel Shootout Truck Pull.

“This pull was added as a feature in place of Demolition Derby due to the lack of cars available for derby cars,” said Jamie Lane, assistant secretary of the Fair Board. “It will be held on Thursday night of the fair, Aug. 27, at 7:30 p.m. in the Main Arena.”

Michael Winter and Anthony Finkbeiner are the two superintendents of the Diesel Shootout Truck Pull. Finkbeiner, who built his own pulling truck, organized classes last year at the fair for the regular truck pull.

“There are quite a few people excited about adding the diesel event,” said Finkbeiner. “I fully expect it to be a crowd favorite.”

There are four classes of diesel pickups:

  1. Farm stock- a bare bones pickup, which is street driven
  2. Work stock-a modified truck that can still be driven on the street and ranges up to 700 horsepower
  3. 2.5 diesel, which is also street driven as has 1100 horsepower
  4. Hot diesel, which includes anything from a street truck that has multiple turbo chargers up to a full blown dedicated pulling truck, up to 1800 horsepower.

“In the sport of pulling, the farther you pull the truck, the harder it is to pull,” said Finkbeiner. “With each class, there’s a different set of rules that limit them- limited horsepower and a weight limit. A pulling transfer sled will weigh 30,000-40,000 pounds.”
