There’s a new website tool that will help volunteers connect with Chelsea nonprofit organizations.

Whether you’re looking for ways to connect with friends and neighbors, to share your knowledge or skills, or help your local community, there are many volunteer opportunities in the Chelsea community. This spring, a new web tool for connecting nonprofit organizations and interested volunteers will be launched here.

The new Volunteer Chelsea portal will help facilitate connecting potential volunteers with nonprofits in the community who have opportunities available, according to a press release.

Local residents will be able to search for volunteer opportunities by type, such as health and wellness, outdoor recreation, social services or the arts.

Non-profits organizations in Chelsea will be able to list available opportunities for volunteers to engage with their organization.

The Volunteer Chelsea portal is funded by a grant from the Chelsea-Area Wellness Foundation through the 5-Healthy Towns initiative to help people “connect with others in healthy ways.” It’s being developed as part of the chelseamich.com website, and is a joint project by the Chelsea Area Chamber of Commerce, with funding from the DDA and the City of Chelsea.

The Volunteer Chelsea portal is being led by a subcommittee of volunteers including Trinh Pifer, director of the Chelsea Area Senior Center), Linda Ballard, assistant director at the Chelsea District Library), Leslie Surel of chelseamich.com and Mike Erwin, a long-time Chelsea volunteer who first brought the idea of this project to the members of the Chelsea Wellness Committee.

Several training workshops are scheduled at the library to help nonprofit organizations or service groups use the portal. There is one on March 26 from 7-8 p.m. and on March 27 from 9-10 a.m. Those interested are asked to contact Ballard to register for either of these sessions.

Also, be sure to mark your calendars for the official ribbon cutting ceremony of the Volunteer Chelsea portal on Saturday, April 13 at 1 p.m. at the Washington Street Education Center during the Chelsea Spring Expo event.

They’ll be a chance to preview the portal, and enjoy refreshments.

For more information, please contact Pifer at 475-9242 or via email [email protected], Ballard at 475-8732 or via email [email protected], or Surel at [email protected].
