The final version of landscaper Meg Gowen’s plan for improvements to Pierce Park was one of the topics at the Chelsea Parks and Recreation Commission’s Dec. 4 meeting.

The plan includes shifting The Rock to make it more visible, which could minimize graffiti by bringing The Rock away from trees. It includes adding shrubs and perennial plants to the front garden.

The proposed plan will be presented to Chelsea City Council at its Dec. 17 meeting. Park improvements could begin as early as the spring of 2019.

Parks Commission members also discussed property acquisition for new parks in the City of Chelsea. One of the few natural areas is property owned by Beach Middle School.

The Parks Commission is considering meeting with school representatives to discuss preserving that land.

Commission members brainstormed ideas for more winter activities in Chelsea and were asked to keep their eyes open for locations and ideas to add to the choices of recreation during the winter months. Cross-country skiing, snow shoeing, sledding, and an ice sculpture event were among the ideas discussed.

For the second year in a row, Chelsea will host a curling festival this winter.

The Parks Commission meets the first Tuesday of the month at 9 a.m. in City Council Chambers. The next meeting is scheduled for Jan. 8, 2019.
